1. Chery 20 Million Sales: The Numbers

Chery 20 million sales is a milestone that took 29 years to build. Founded in 1997, the company crossed 1 million cumulative sales in 2007 — the first Chinese brand to do so. It took 10 years to sell the first million. The 20th million arrived 19 years after the first. The acceleration is real.

The 20 millionth vehicle is a Fulwin A9 — an all-electric sedan that shares its nameplate with Chery’s first model, introduced in 1997, which was also the company’s first export. The symmetry is deliberate: the car that marks 20 million is named after the car that started it all. Fulwin means “wind and cloud” in Chinese. Chery is signaling that its second act is electric and global, just as its first act was combustion and domestic.

2. One in Three: The Export Story

Chery is not China’s biggest automaker. It’s not China’s most profitable automotive group. But it is indisputably China’s most global. One in three Chery owners lives outside China — a ratio no other Chinese automaker comes close to matching. H1 exports of 943,817 vehicles grew 71.5% year-on-year. June exports of 191,062 vehicles set a Chinese export record for the fourth consecutive month. One Chery left China every 17 seconds in June.

Europe is the fastest-growing region: 174,000 vehicles sold in H1, up 212%. In the UK, Chery ranked in the top two brands for four consecutive months, and the Jaecoo 7 was the single best-selling model for one month. This is not a Chinese brand selling on price in emerging markets. This is a Chinese brand competing for brand preference in Europe’s most competitive automotive market. Domestic sales, by contrast, grew just 7.7% in H1. The export engine is not supplementing the domestic business. It’s carrying it.

3. The Factory Footprint: This Week Alone

Chery’s globalization is not just about shipping cars. It’s about building factories. On July 23, Chery started production at a new plant in Malaysia — the iCar V23, with 100,000-unit annual capacity. Earlier this month, the company revived Nissan’s former Rosslyn plant in South Africa, retaining all 692 employees. In 2024, Chery partnered with Spain’s EV Motors to revive the Ebro brand in Barcelona, creating more than 1,000 jobs. The Chery-JLR joint venture’s Freelander 8 begins pre-sales on August 10.

Chery now has 150,000 employees globally — more than 20,000 outside China. It operates brands including Chery, Exeed, Fulwin, iCar, and Jetour across more than 130 countries. This is not an export operation with a few overseas distributors. This is a multinational manufacturing company with factories on four continents, a European brand joint venture, and a Chinese domestic market that accounts for only about two-thirds of its customer base.

Author’s TakeChery is the Chinese automaker that the West doesn’t talk about enough. BYD gets the headlines. Geely gets the M&A stories. Nio gets the technology narrative. But Chery has been quietly building the most geographically diversified manufacturing base of any Chinese automotive company — and its 35% overseas ownership rate is the proof.

What makes Chery different is not the product. It’s the patience. The company has been exporting for 23 years without interruption. It wasn’t riding a wave of Chinese EV dominance — it was building distribution networks and factory partnerships in markets where Chinese cars were unknown, long before the export boom of the 2020s. The 20 million milestone is the result of that patience. The Malaysia factory, the South Africa revival, the UK market-share numbers — these are not breakthrough moments. They’re the accumulated returns on two decades of showing up.

The Bottom Line
