1. The Acceleration
2021: China exported ~2M vehicles in a year. 2023: overtook Germany/Japan. 2025: 7.1M. June 2026: 1.037M in one month — a decent half-year in 2023.
Growth accelerating: January +45% YoY → June +75%. CPCA’s Cui Dongshu: China’s complete NEV supply chain (battery/motor/electronics cost advantage), filling the gap from slow Toyota/VW electrification, and ASEAN/Middle East/Russia demand surging. Vietnam +35%. Thailand +15%.
2. The Electric Tipping Point
NEVs now >50% of exports for the first time — 523K (+160% YoY). H1 NEV exports: 2.355M (+120%), 46.2% of total. Two years ago NEVs were <30%.
Chinese vehicles command ~10% price premium in Europe — 800V charging, integrated die-casting, proprietary batteries. BYD exported 170,897 units in June (34.2% of NEV exports). Tesla China: 36,171 (fourth).
3. What 10 Million Means
Full-year pace: >10M — roughly Japan’s total domestic output. Exceeds Germany + UK annual sales combined. Happening while Western markets actively block Chinese vehicles.
Fastest growth in ASEAN, Middle East, Russia — not Europe. Every tariff wall redirects exports to markets without walls. CAAM forecast 7.4M — H1 already 69% there.
Author’s Take: At 34,000 vehicles a day, China is now the auto industry’s largest exporter, largest NEV source, and — with that 10% European price premium — a brand consumers pay more for. Tariffs and bans will slow this. They won’t stop it. There are too many other markets, and too many cars rolling off assembly lines.
The Bottom Line
China vehicle exports: 1M/month. NEVs the majority. Annual pace 10M+. Five years ago: 2M/year. Now: 2M every two months. China’s auto industry is no longer a domestic market that exports. It’s an export machine with a large domestic base. The distinction matters.
