Xiaomi Sky Nomad: The Company That Said It Would Only Build Pure EVs Just Named Its EREV Brand

The Big Picture

  • Xiaomi Sky Nomad confirmed via Xiaomi EV’s Weibo. “SkyNomad. Sky, nomad. A new name about space and life.”
  • First model: full-size EREV SUV over 5.3m, Kunlun N3. 70+ kWh battery, 400-500km EV range. Sunwoda (60%) + CALB (40%). Starting ~200,000 yuan ($29,400).
  • This is the EREV pivot we flagged three weeks ago. Now with an official name.

1. From Spy Shot to Official Name

Xiaomi Sky Nomad is official. Xiaomi EV posted on Weibo: “A new name about space and life, saying hello to everyone first.” Ambiguous on brand vs. series — likely deliberate. Chinese name possibly “小米澎程” or “寻天” (Xuntian). Trademark applications filed since August 2025.

First vehicle, Kunlun N3: full-size EREV SUV, >5.3m. Five-seat and seven-seat versions. The seven-seater features a roof lifting mechanism with built-in rooftop tent — “Nomad” positioning.

2. The Hardware

The numbers explain the urgency. VW is facing overcapacity in Europe, falling margins, and intensifying competition from Chinese carmakers entering its home market. The management board is drawing up a new restructuring plan that goes beyond existing cost-cutting measures, including further workforce reductions.

Meanwhile, VW’s China R&D operation — centered at VW Anhui in Hefei, now the group’s second-largest R&D center after Wolfsburg — is delivering results faster and cheaper. Handelsblatt reports that development costs in China are roughly 40% lower than in Europe, with shorter cycles and room for further improvement. A vehicle that costs €1 billion to develop in Wolfsburg costs €600 million in Hefei.

The math is brutal. Even if the EU maintains anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese-made BEVs, the 40% R&D savings — plus lower manufacturing costs — can absorb the import duties and still undercut the cost of developing and building an equivalent vehicle entirely in Europe.

3. Why This Matters

Xiaomi built its brand on pure EV performance. SU7 = Taycan competitor. YU7 = autonomous Nürburgring. Sky Nomad is a complete strategic pivot — “space and life,” not speed. Family SUVs, not sports cars.

2026 target: 550,000 units (+34%). Jan-May: 150,317. Xiaomi needs volume, and EREV family SUVs are the biggest segment. Li Auto and Aito owned 7 of 10 top-selling EREV SUVs in 2025, all above 250,000 yuan. Sky Nomad at 200,000 yuan disrupts that ladder.

Author’s Take: Xiaomi’s brand strategy is smart. By keeping Sky Nomad separate from the Xiaomi badge, it protects premium BEV positioning while attacking volume EREV with a different identity. This is Porsche’s Cayenne playbook: don’t put a 911 badge on an SUV. Create a new name. Sky Nomad is Xiaomi’s Cayenne — the vehicle that pays for the sports cars. At $29,400, it’s priced to sell.

The Bottom Line

Xiaomi Sky Nomad is a named brand with a confirmed first model — full-size EREV SUV launching H2 2026 at $29,400. Xiaomi spent two years as a pure-EV company. Now it’s entering the family SUV segment with a different brand identity and a price that undercuts incumbents by nearly half. Li Auto and Aito should be paying attention.
